Who is the unknown gentleman set to arrive in the sleepy English town of Much Becksleigh?

That is a question of consuming interest to three spirited, but dissimilar, young women who live there in Regency times-Eleanor, Priscilla and Ruth. Their hopes, fears and misapprehensions burst to the surface as the handsome, young gentleman arrives, disrupting the quiet routine of their lives.

William Pearce knows that isolated Much Becksleigh will be transformed into a bustling market town by the construction of a new canal connecting it with thriving regional trade. But is this something that the local community wants? And can he overcome the resistance of eccentric landowners in the area? He must succeed—his whole future depends on it.

But little does he realise what he faces in this seemingly placid town, not least from the three women themselves, whose fates are deeply intertwined with the unforeseen events that unfold.

Poles apart, they are unwittingly thrown into close contact by force of circumstances which they both resent.

Wishing only to be left alone to get on with their lives, they are both overtaken by change, conflict and drama brought on by the impending completion of the Beck-sleigh canal. Together they must overcome the unexpected trials that come their way.
